Spring Garden Maintenance in Melbourne

Plant Specialists for Your Garden Management
The warm weather has finally arrived! Melbourne has just been through the coldest start to spring in over twenty years. This often affects people’s enthusiasm for their gardens. But with great rainfall and cooler weather since winter, gardens will explode into growth over summer and this is especially true for vegetable patches and edible landscapes.
Van Leeuwen Green provides a full range of garden management and landscape maintenance services and this includes edible landscapes. We also offer an edible garden design service. We take great pride in helping you create a landscape that provides beauty as well as food. As plant specialists Van Leeuwen Green can help you source a diverse range of fruit trees, from apples and citrus through to less common trees like Loquats and Figs. We have many clients who use our professional garden maintenance service for their veggie gardens, especially in spring. Our garden teams will help get your favourite vegetables in the ground ready for harvest throughout summer and autumn.
It's Time to Plant Your Tomatoes
There’s a famous saying for Melbourne that you should plant your tomatoes on Cup Day or early November! This year Van Leeuwen Green is sticking to this old rule and we’re planting tomatoes throughout November up to about mid-December. In recent years with warm Septembers and Octobers we’ve been planting tomatoes earlier but this year the cooler weather has delayed a lot of planting until now. For the majority of our clients in suburbs such as Camberwell, Hawthorn, Toorak, Malvern and St Kilda, we’re also planting zucchinis, beans, basil and cucumbers as the weather warms up. Van Leeuwen Green can also provide you with more unusual crops that grow surprisingly well in Melbourne such as Sweet Potato, Lemon Grass and Kang Kong (water spinach).
Edible landscapes do need more care and attention than ornamental gardens and this especially applies to watering. Van Leeuwen Green recommends drip irrigation and we can make implement an efficient drip system for your food garden.
Finally spring is also about general garden maintenance. Before the weather gets too hot it’s time to fill in any gaps in your garden with robust flowering perennials such as Day Lily and to mulch your garden heavily. Contact Van Leeuwen Green so that we can get your garden fully prepared before Christmas!
